November 3, 2007: Peritus Precision Translations, Inc. presents on "ISO - Why it Matters" at National ATA Conference in San Francisco
Continuous improvement should be more than lip service. It needs to become a way of life in a quality-conscious translation agency. The presentation covered what International Standard Organization (ISO) 9001:2000 certification means for: 1) translators who work with a certified agency; 2) clients; and 3) small or large agencies that are already ISO-certified or are considering certification. By having solid processes in place prior to implementing a Quality Management System, and following an honest quality mindset certainly helped to set this company up for success. But it was the disciplined, and persistent approach of both management and all of the staff, that has made Peritus a prime example for how a small firm, with focused management and consistent processes can achieve great things. Peritus is proud to present one of our translators' work on the newly released book from the Boston Consulting Group, Clausewitz on Strategy. The business world loves military analogies - the idea that the essence of modern commerce can be reduced to a noisy engagement between warring battalions. And war does provide a context to study strategy in action, which means that today's business world can obtain much useful information from Carl von Clausewitz, the Prussian military thinker of the early 19th century. Clausewitz on Strategy addresses this issue, and it has received excellent reviews. Amazon.com reports that the book has been as high as #45 and that it spent more than a week as #26 among business books. One of Peritus Precision Translations' translators, William Skinner, has translated the original Clausewitz excerpts. The work on this project was reviewed in-house. Peritus has had an ongoing business relationship with the Boston Consulting Group, translating various articles and manuscripts. We knew that the translation of the excerpts from Clausewitz's original work On War (1832) would be much different from today's articles on business and strategy. Bill Skinner studied the majority of the 700-page original in order to make sure that all the excerpts were translated correctly in terms of context and vocabulary. We are very proud of the final result, and we are also proud of being mentioned under Acknowledgements in Clausewitz on Strategy: "In addition, we thank (.) Bill Skinner, Dagmar Dolatschko, and Peritus Precision Translations, Inc., for our new translation of Clausewitz that is so faithful to the original."

Virtually yours . how the Internet enables a woman's business Dagmar Dolatschko, the owner of Peritus Precision Translations, Inc. has a story to tell: It's a success story of how to make the Internet and emerging technology work for you. A story about a mother who manages to run her business, with help from trusted assistants who are not necessarily sitting in her office so she can keep her toddler with her at all times. A story about using the Internet, telephone tools and the mobility of laptops and cell phones without compromising client satisfaction. There were many months, after Dagmar's child was born, where she had no "in-house" help at all, yet the phones were always covered, faxes and e-mail got read and clients received responses within hours. How did she do it? The bookkeeper in Rhode Island, telephone support in Arizona, a "virtual" project manager in Massachusetts, and part-time help in California for DTP and when the going got tough? How did it all work, let a small company grow, and kept a child happy and at his mother's side? It's a major juggling act. Maybe there was a reason, Dagmar took juggling and unicycle lessons in her youth. You might call it "transferable skills". Yet, she kept her company growing with just this type of network, working with other women she had learned to trust over the years, who know her business and who each fulfill specific tasks in the project cycle of a translation agency. Any given business day, Dagmar would check e-mail before her child even awoke, send instructions to the telephone support person in Arizona and project manager in Massachusetts, of what to expect of the day, and draw up a list of priorities for herself. She would also respond to requests from Europe or the East Coast, make a few phone calls, and then get back to family tasks, of reading a good morning book, brushing little teeth, making breakfast. In between, a quick glance at e-mail. If any urgent calls had come in by now, if there was a response from the client's project manager for a current project. Then delegate tasks some more to free up a bit more time for the child. Some of the most efficient work time is during the toddler's naptime. Dagmar learned to work with even more prioritization, faster, more efficiently, especially during this time, and during the 15-20 minute increments when the child is playing. Needless to say, there's lots of work to catch up on in the evenings, after her son goes to bed. Granted, not every job serves itself to this type of work-style. But not every person is going to be able to work like this either. Dagmar had consciously built her business in a way, so she would be able to spend the time with her child, without giving up her professional life. Some days, and almost impossibly juggling act, some days total bliss. "It is worth it", she says. "It will last only a few years, then my son goes to kindergarten, then to school - and then I have the rest of my life to continue to build the business". In the meantime, she runs her company with this virtual team of women who are in similar situations in their life - who juggle work and family and were looking for a chance to work like this. With flexibility, yet maintaining a professional interest. By now, Dagmar has received added support from an in-house project manager as off late summer 2001. Yet, the virtual team is still in place, supporting the growth of a company that could be a trendsetter for other women who try to juggle it all. Peritus moves headquarters to San Carlos, California (Summer 2000) Part business, part personal was the decision to move back West for Dagmar Dolatschko and her family. One thing is for sure, the new location in the heart of the Bay Area Peninsula, halfway between Silicon Valley and San Francisco, within walking distance to the commuter train, would be beneficial for this growing translation agency. The past four years in Plymouth, Massachusetts had been a time of building and development, a time of networking, of being active in local business, from the Plymouth Chamber, the Silicon Sandbar to the Global Business Alliance and the building of the German American Council for Business. Dagmar Dolatschko's efforts in building not only her translation agency, but also in contributing to the local business community paid off in terms of receiving recognition as a business owner and in developing new clients. All East-coast clients remain loyal to Peritus, even though it meant for some that they were choosing to do business with an out-of-state vendor now. But they felt, it was more important to get their translations done by somebody they had learned to trust and where they knew what to expect. Distance does not make any difference in this day and age of the Internet. Soon, word of mouth traveled and led to new clients in the West as well. From small law firms to large high-tech manufacturers, interesting advertising projects and website translations, Peritus continued to grow not just in revenue, but also in scope. The firm also added a significant number of Asian language translators, editors, and interpreters, as well as some local desktop publishing specialists to the affiliate team. Peritus still maintains an East Coast location in Plymouth, Massachusetts. Please view our "Contact us" page for additional information on both locations. |
